sustainability at Starscape

Tread Lightly.

Stay Slowly.

We exist to help people slow down and reconnect with nature. That connection comes with responsibility - to the energy that powers the cabin, the water we use, and the businesses we choose to support.

Sometimes the most sustainable thing to do is nothing.

OUR SIMPLEST LEVER

Starscape has a two-night minimum stay, by design. It gives guests time to properly arrive and settle, while fewer turnovers mean less cleaning, laundry, preparation and coming and going.

Once here, we encourage guests to stay present rather than fill their days with driving and itineraries: watch the stars, sit by the fire, soak in the bath, cook slowly, or simply do nothing.

It is at the heart of what Starscape stands for: slowing down, staying present and giving yourself the time and space to truly rest.

01

Powered by sun, mostly

Starscape draws first from the abundant sunlight of the Central Tablelands - a 6.6kW solar system backed by 16kWh of battery storage. The system is grid-connected, so any surplus solar we generate feeds back into the grid, offsetting the power we draw when the battery runs low. Energy-efficient appliances and LED lighting quietly reduce demand throughout Cabin Astra either way.

Even the SunHalo sauna plays its part, it uses roughly half the energy of a traditional sauna, and needs no water to run.

02

Every drop matters

In the country, water is never taken for granted. Starscape relies on rainwater collected and stored on the property, so rainfall is simply part of everyday life here.

Choosing an infrared sauna over a steam one means our signature wellness experience uses no water at all - a small, easily forgotten connection: the water you use began with the rain that fell around you.

03

Protecting the dark

One of Starscape's greatest assets appears after sunset. Our Bortle 2 skies reveal thousands of stars, and protecting that darkness is part of how we operate - outdoor lighting stays purposeful and considered, so nothing unnecessary competes with the night.

Sustainability isn't only what we add. Sometimes it's what we choose to leave out.

04

Australian first

The products we choose for Cabin Astra come from Australian businesses - many B Corp, FSC or OEKO-TEX certified, organic, or built on recycled packaging and ethical sourcing. Our network includes Leif Australia, iKOU, See Saw Wines, Sheet Society, T2 Tea, Bed Threads and Haigh's Chocolates, among others.

Where practical, Australian first becomes local first, celebration florals from Bathurst and Blayney, organic wine from Orange, and a standing recommendation of regional producers guests can discover on their way to or from Starscape.

05

Less, but better

We start by avoiding unnecessary consumption, rather than managing waste after the fact. Single-use items are minimised throughout the cabin, and we provide pantry staples so guests don't need to buy full-sized ingredients for a short stay.

Fallen timber from the property becomes firewood. It's the same philosophy that shapes Starscape itself, we don't need more, we need what matters.

06

Caring for 100 acres

Starscape occupies only a small part of our 100-acre property. We manage weeds and biosecurity across the land, keep lighting to a minimum, and weigh every piece of new infrastructure against its impact on the landscape.

The land isn't the backdrop to Starscape. It's fundamental to the experience.

From intention to accountability.

MEASURING OUR IMPACT

Starscape is Sustainable Tourism accredited through the Quality Tourism Framework. In FY26, we formalised how we measure our footprint across Scope 1, 2 and relevant Scope 3 emissions.

01

Established our emissions baseline

Completed a whole-of-property emissions inventory - our first, and now our benchmark.

02

Created a reduction pathway

Set practical priorities across energy, purchasing and waste, giving us a framework to measure progress against.

03

Engaged our supply chain

Started factoring freight distance, packaging and materials into how we choose suppliers.

04

Reduce first, offset last

Avoiding and reducing emissions comes first. Any future offsets will be reputable, independently verified, and disclosed.

Our goal isn't to claim perfection. It's to measure, understand, improve and be transparent about it.

The greatest luxuries are increasingly simple.

A JOURNEY, NOT A FINISH LINE

Space. Silence. Nature. Time.

Protecting them means making sure they're still here for the people who come after us.
